NOTE:  Read below to see Nagla’s clever ideas for getting Mimi to drink from the water bottle and to monitor how much she drank.

Subject: Mimi drinking!

Betsie - I attached a piece of turkey jerky to the nozzle with a rubber band (see pic). This seemed to work and Mimi drank! not only was she no longer scared, but she laid next to the stand when finished, like almost to protect it, lol!

I stuck a post it note to the water line on the bottle to monitor her drinking while at work today.

Subject: Pics of Mimi

Hi again...

Here are pics of Mimi licking the pb off the spout. She would get all of the pb off without moving the ball, then walk away from it.

As I stated in my previous email, I will try to put cheese, liverwurst, on the top and ball itself and also flavor the water.

Hope this works!

Thanks Betsie. I put some cream cheese, (another Fav of Mimi's), on the tip where the ball is this morning before I left for work. I also put chicken broth in the water (I'm going to get some liverwurst today). I placed her water bowl underneath as you suggested and put a little bit of water in it.

I hope she takes to it soon. I'll keep you posted.

Hi Betsie,

I received the stand yesterday an it is gorgeous! I am so impressed with your work.

I cleaned the bottle thoroughly, rubbed it on my clothes, put some pb on it and let Mimi play with it on the floor. She licked all of the pb off an the walked away from it.

Then I filled it with water and placed it on the stand. I put pb on the tip again and after sniffing all around it, she finally went up to the tip and licked all the pb off and walked away again. She will not lick where the ball is to allow water to come out though.

After a little while She seemed really thirsty so I placed her old water bowl next to it with a little water in it. She drank that until the bowl was dry and then walked away.

I know this may take a few days but i wanted to get your advice, what do u suggest? Should I keep putting water in her old bowl? I don't want her to be thirsty, but I also don't want her to get used to that and never use the stand.

Thanks so much for your advice.

Nagla

Received the water stand yesterday and it is just gorgeous. I adjusted the height one notch lower and now it’s just right for Teddy. Hope you don't get any of that dreadful storm on the east coast and stay safe. Had a minor earthquake here last night at 12:45 AM PST and another minor around 8:30 AM. A very sharp jolt. Prior to that was the Canadian earthquake. Must certainly be linked. Again, thank you and your husband for the wonderful artistic creations and timely shipment.

Sincerely,
Diana Lee

Well Betsie,

I am going ahead and sending you pictures before I get your water bottle. Hope you enjoy. My brown and white is my 5 1/2 month old and the grey and white is 4 yr old Tache, my Polish Lowland Sheepdogs.

I took these photos today and my computer skills are such that I was unable to pick and choose so I am sending more than anyone wants. But hey, aren't they as cute as bugs in a rug. Looks like Hatchi devoured an entire pear! Hope that does not cause you know what! The last picture shows them both resting in the crate that they went into on their own volition and the door is open. Looks like we will all have to go swimming this afternoon to clean off our faces!

Note for all who may read this feedback.  Below are some links on Megaesophagus to help explain it better.

In the first picture Magick, a Miniature Poodle who has Canine Megaesophagus is standing on his hind legs with his front legs on a ledge for balance as he drinks because he cannot drink in the normal position.

The second picture is of Henry, a Standard Poodle who is much taller and can drink in the normal position.

We do not normally make stands taller than 35-inches but for Magick we did.  The stand in the pictures below is 45-inches tall and both the water bottle support unit and the ledges we made so Magick would have a place to balance himself are adjustable in height.

Hi Betsie,

I appreciate your interest in the subject of megaesophagus. Magick has had the condition since he was born, but we didn't know what was causing him to regurgitate water until our vet diagnosed it when he was about two. We are lucky in that he only seems to have trouble with water and holds down food with no problem as long as he doesn't eat too much at one time.

We are also lucky that we live about five minutes away from Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston, one of the country's foremost animal care and research centers. There is a specialist in megaesophagus at Angell and he has been taking care of Magick since he was diagnosed. That is why we originally devised the water bottle hanging on the tall gate so that he would have to stand on two legs while he drank. If he drinks too fast, he will regurgitate, but most of the time he holds the water down. The other issue we have with him is that, when he sleeps, the saliva pools in his mouth and throat because he is unable to swallow it and he often has to cough the saliva up when he first gets up in the morning. He has had aspiration pneumonia a couple of times from choking on the saliva during the night, but that has not happened for a couple of years thank goodness. He is also on two medications twice a day, 5 mg. of Pepcid and a drug called Cisapride which was originally developed for humans, but was found to have negative side effects so was pulled off the market. We have it compounded at a local pharmacy and it seems to help a lot.

Based on many of the letters from people who have dogs with megaesophagus that I saw online, I would think that the extra tall stand with steps to lean on like the one you made for Magick would be a godsend. I do wonder why so many dogs seem to be afflicted with the condition. I had never heard of it before Magick was diagnosed.

Regards, Ruth

Hi Betsie,
I just wanted you to know that we received the water stand yesterday and it is great! Both dogs started to use it almost immediately after some initial curiosity and sniffing around. The steps work perfectly for Magick after a slight adjustment in height. I will send you a picture soon. Once again, thank you to you and your husband for working with us to find a solution for our boy. Your willingness to customize a stand for him was above and beyond anything we could have wanted.

Warm regards,
Ruth, Laurie, Magick and Henry

Hi, Betsie.
I was able to take this short video clip of my little Puca stopping for a quick drink in the middle of playing & thought you might like to see it. (The stand is still in the middle setting but I'll probably need to move it to the top in a week or two--we both love it!)

I love my stand I ordered for my little Shih- Tzu for Christmas. It looks so nice and I was really surprised when I opened the box. It was so much more than I had expected. Very well crafted and unique.

Hi, Betsie,

The water stand is wonderful! My pup looked at it and looked at me as if to say, "It's about time you got me one of these," and then got a nice long drink. The middle setting is perfect for now--we'll see how big she gets. Thank you for getting it to us so quickly & for packaging it so carefully. I'll try to get a few photos of her using the stand (when she's not looking-she's such a ham,) and send them along.
Thanks again,

Jaclyn

This is my second Water Stand! The first has the food bowl, too and I’ll this one to put upstairs in my office for little Sophie. It’s so great to have this clean way for my little Shih Tzu to get her water without getting her face soaked! It’s wonderful!
